South Alabama rode a strong outing by pitcher D.D. Hanks and handed Florida International a 7-1 loss in the opening game of the Sun Belt Conference baseball tournament on Wednesday afternoon in Murfreesboro, TN.

The Jaguars (32-25) took a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat when Tyler Vick produced a sac fly and Brent Tanner singled to right

FIU (31-23) scored a single run in the second Jeremy Patton doubled and Yoandy Barroso singled to score him.

USA upped its advantage to 4-1 in the seventh when Zach Grichor homered to left.

It wouldn’t need any insurance due to the performance by Hanks, but the Jags tacked on three more insurance runs in the top of the ninth.  Designated hitter Adam Heisler delivered a two-run single and Jake Overstreet had a sac fly to left.

R.J. Fandon (5-3) went 8.1 innings in the losing effort.  He allowed seven runs—five earned—on ten hits while striking out seven and walking no one.

Jeremy Patton and Yoandy Barroso each had three hits for Florida International.
